Bite Me

Parr and I saw Underworld: Evolution tonight. I’d have to say it was better than the first although a bit harder to follow, background story wise. Some of the things that stood out for me was the excellent armor in the opening sequence, crossbows that shot heavy chain linked arrows, detailed blood effects, werewolf realism and some non-stereotypical handing of certain situations. You know, the stereo type that whenever you let someone drink your blood, they can’t help but try to suck you dry? Yeah, they didn’t lower themselves to that tired routine once. Thank you!

There were only a few minor things that erked me. The first and by far the worst was the main Vampire villain pulling a helicopter out of the air just by tugging on a rope that was attached to it. The second was the very unrealistic sex scene between the male and female heroes. Look, I’m no virgin but I’ve seen dry humping that was more realistic. I mean, there is a certain physics in sex and their groins were not anywhere near the correct angles, vectors or even approach patterns. Either simulate sex the right way and get really close or just skip that whole scene in the movie. Plus, is it really necessary to have sex after large fight scenes? I don’t know about you but almost getting killed does not translate into priority one making babies mode.

Anyway, in summary I’d like to say that you’ll probably enjoy this movie if you like the genre. If not, stay at home and have proper sex. Your partner will thank you.

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

I really like this movie. For me it is somewhat similar to Napoleon Dynamite in that the director does not feel rushed all the time. I for one can definitely approve of realistic portrayals of life, even if it means you have to sit through some awkward moments.

The Life Aquatic is about a washed up Jaq Cousteau type figure who loses his best friend while filming a documentary. He boldly proclaims that after being a drunkard for one day that he will embark on this quest to kill the thing that got his friend. His oddball team ends up following along with some new members including his recently reunited son, a pack of interns seeking school credit and a pregnant report. Hilarity ensues soon after of course.

There are a lot of mini-memorable moments that I’m sure I’ll be reliving with Parr for the next few days. Plus the Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op tune by Mark Mothersbough is so infectious I think it will stay with me eternally.

The Life Aquatic is one of those movies that I can see myself championing although I think it would be folly to think that everyone would like it.

It can be slow, demented and awkward but it is very amusing none the less. I give it 4 out of 5 smegs, which um… in this case should be considered good.

Don’t forget to check out The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou site for previews, wallpapers and other goodies. It’s quite the perfect use of flash, video and other yummy technologies.

An hour of searching online for the song turned up nothing but preview clips. Ten seconds (literally!) of searching on DC++ found this audible gem.

The Incredibles, Speakers and Back to Work

The Incredibles is very entertaining and comes with a great message. If you have a talent, why hide it? Use it for good and people will love you for it.

As an adult with a full time job and family ties I can really relate to that. I’m not saying I’m an actor all the time I just realize that I sometimes adapt very extremely in certain situations and I am not comfortable with the part I play. As I get older, my feelings of myself get stronger and I no longer wish to play any little games of socializing. I am who I am and you are welcome to hang around that. I will not be (as John Stewart put it) your monkey.

Ops, I think I went off on a tangent there. Hehe.

The Incredibles movie is really good and I highly suggest it. Great animation, story (I almost cried at one point) and pacing. In fact, its soo good that our lazy american audience actually clapped at the end of the film.

In other unrelated geek news I’ve heard a lot of good things about the new Logitech Z-5500 speakers. These are the next revision of the speaker series I truly hate, the Z-680.

The Z-680s had some very serious problems including a constant hiss due to an improperly shielded control pod, crude volume controls and a digital display that could only be read within certain small cones of vision. Bleah!

The Z-5500s I listened to in the store exhibited some white noise (nothing too serious) but I couldn’t tell if this was due to the nasty audio sharing setup or something inherent to the speakers. More inexcusably though was the fact that volume control is still set too crudely using large increments.

I don’t know about you but when music, games or a movie is too soft or too loud it pisses the hell out of me. Not being able to adequately control the volume through their (albeit nice looking) digital control pod is inexcusable. Sorry Logitech, maybe next time.

They did fix the cone of vision for their display but I’ll keep holding out for a better speaker setup. My current system isn’t quite stellar but it’s pretty good.

I should probably just spend $150 and get a pair of really comfy circumaural headphones that sound like a $1500 speaker system anyway.

Ah well, the weekend is winding down, World of Warcraft isn’t “doing it” for me and I’ve got to behave at work all next week cause the big wigs are visiting. Bleah!

Ah, with any luck I’ll get Half-Life 2 this week.
